With more than two decades of experience across the NBL, Europe and player development, Joey has seen just about every version of the coaching journey. But his philosophy keeps coming back to one fundamental idea: the coach is there to help players achieve their goals. We talk about creating a vision of success, changing the language around what players believe they can achieve, and holding players to a higher standard while still being someone they can trust. Joey also shares his approach to player development, shot selection and giving players room to think, make mistakes and learn. Failure is a particularly important part of that process. At Shoot HQ, Joey encourages players to push themselves to the point where they might fail because, as he puts it, “the fixing is in the failure.” From juniors through to professional players, Joey believes the fundamentals of good coaching remain the same: understand the player, identify what they need to improve, set the direction, and then hold them accountable for doing the work.   The Perfect, Unperfect Season (w Luke Tadich)

  We sat down with Luke Tadich to unpack what he describes as his “perfect, unperfect” season in junior representative basketball. Stepping into his first head coaching role, Luke admits he didn’t feel completely prepared for what was ahead. With injuries, illness, a son sidelined by a serious knee injury and plenty of uncertainty along the way, there were moments when he genuinely questioned whether he could keep going. Rather than trying to do everything himself, Luke chose to seek help. He brought in experienced coaches and NBL1 players, used film and player feedback to identify areas for improvement, and continually adjusted the team’s approach throughout the season. The result was more than just a successful season. It became a lesson in humility, adaptability and the value of constantly looking for the next 1%. We talk about knowing when to ask for help, explaining the “why” behind what we teach, developing basketball IQ, balancing development with the desire to win, and creating an environment where players understand that getting better is a long-term process. And there’s a little milestone for us too. This is Episode 26 of Coach2Coach, marking one full year of Fast Break Chats. A pretty fitting conversation to mark the occasion, with plenty of lessons about the fact that the best coaching seasons aren’t necessarily the ones that go perfectly.
