The story follows the tragic fates of Currer, Althesea, and Clotel. Currer, the former mulatto mistress of President Thomas Jefferson, shares two daughters, Althesea and Clotel, with him. Initially enjoying a comfortable life due to her beauty and status, everything changes with her masters death. Ultimately, Currer and Althesea are sold to the notorious slave trader, Dick Walker, while Clotel is purchased by her lover, Horatio Green. The separation of these three women marks the beginning of their struggle against the injustices that plague their lives. The novel gained notoriety amidst
