St. Bernard gave up wealth and comfort to found the monastery of Clairvaux, bringing thirty companions with him. From then on, he rode across the Lakota lands of South Dakota as a catechist, teaching his own people about Baptism, the Eucharist, and Our Lady in words only he could speak. Along the way she visited prisoners, cared for the sick, and gave alms to the poor — pilgrimage lived out through mercy.
