Episode #6
Stop Worshiping Willpower
Tomorrow is always a day away and it’s also the place we hide our best intentions. We’ve all done it: we promise we’ll scroll less, drink less, eat better, train more, create more… then we leave temptation everywhere and act surprised when we make the easy choice. This conversation is a reset for anyone tired of turning self-improvement into a daily argument with their own brain. We dig into why willpower feels powerful but runs out fast, especially after a full day of decisions. The real lever is environment design: what’s visible, what’s convenient, and what silently “votes” for your default behavior. We walk through practical habit formation tactics like reducing decision fatigue, removing friction that blocks the habits you want, and adding friction that protects you from the habits you’re trying to outgrow. That includes your physical space and your digital space. Your phone is an environment engineered for attention, not focus, so we talk notifications, home screens, charging outside the bedroom, and how boredom can be the doorway to original thought. We also get specific about the kitchen and alcohol: what’s stocked, what’s prepared, and what’s within arm’s reach is often the real plan. Finally, we look at your calendar as an environment with no walls and build a “floor” a minimum standard that keeps your identity alive on hard days. Try the seven-day friction flip: remove three steps from one habit you want more of, add three steps to one habit you want less of, and track whether your setup made the decision easier.
