Episode 17: Being Good at What You Do Isn't the Same as Building a Business
Episode 17: Being Good at What You Do Isn't the Same as Building a Business Most of us don't start a business because we know how to build a business. We start because we're good at something. I saw it constantly during my years in the trades. Someone could be an exceptional plumber or HVAC technician, open their own company, and suddenly discover that doing the work was only a small part of owning the business. I lived my own version of that too. In Episode 17 of Business Coaches Corner , I look back at what those early years taught me about the difference between being good at your craft and creating a business that can actually function without depending on you for everything. It's something I now see with coaches all the time. Someone can be extraordinary at helping clients and still struggle with finding those clients, pricing their services, creating consistent revenue, or building a business that doesn't consume all of their time. Looking back across the plumbing company, the fitness business, my coaching practice, and even the year I spent working while traveling through Costa Rica and Mexico, I can see how my own definition of a successful business changed along the way. Eventually, I stopped asking only how much a business could grow and started paying attention to the life it was creating for the person who owned it. If you're building a coaching business—or wondering why being great at coaching hasn't made the business side any easier—I think you'll recognize yourself somewhere in this episode.
