EP 27 - The Water Butler 3000 - Gardening Robot
Summer 2026, and half the country's gardens are going brown under a hosepipe ban. This week Mark and Amanda pitch a fix: the Water Butler, a tiny autonomous robot that carries a watering can, fills itself from the tap or water butt, and delivers water plant-by-plant using an extendable arm. Technically it's not a hose, so technically you're in the clear. On the Brilliant side: targeted watering uses a fraction of what a hose does, your rainwater butt finally gets used, and less mobile gardeners keep their borders alive. On the Bonkers side: nine litres a trip means forty trips at tortoise pace, there's a robot full of water and electronics rolling across a sloping lawn, and — inevitably — the dog. Is out-engineering a hosepipe ban clever or cheating? Would the neighbours cheer or report you? And how would Mark make money from it? The Judgement Giraffe cranes its neck and delivers a verdict.
