Lucas and Luna step into the clean, cool world of biotechnology startups, where drug discovery meets the harsh realities of FDA approvals and venture capital. Each episode takes a single biotech company—from Moderna to a tiny CRISPR spinout—and dissects its science, its business model, and the regulatory path that determines its fate. Lucas brings the numbers: clinical trial phases, patent cliffs, burn rates. Luna presses on the human stories: the researchers betting careers on a single molecule, the patients waiting for therapies that might never come. They don't celebrate hype; they ask whether the science holds up, whether the market exists, and whether the FDA will say yes. Listeners will walk away able to read a biotech 10-K, understand a Phase II readout, and spot the difference between a genuine breakthrough and a stock promotion. How do you value a company with no revenue and a 90% chance of failure?#Biotech #Lifesciences #DrugDiscovery #FDAApprovals #ClinicalTrials #Startups

Episode #162
How Biotech Startups Use Spatial Transcriptomics
Aug 21, 202612 minS4
This episode of Biotech Business explores how startups are using spatial transcriptomics to map gene activity directly inside tissue, revealing the cellular geography of disease. Lucas and Luna break down the technology — from imaging-based methods like MERFISH to sequencing-based platforms — and discuss how it's reshaping drug discovery, from identifying novel targets to stratifying patients for clinical trials. They highlight a fresh, recent case: a startup using spatial transcriptomics to uncover a new cellular neighborhood in early-stage breast cancer that correlates with immunotherapy resistance, potentially opening a new biomarker avenue. They also touch on the computational hurdles — massive datasets, integration with single-cell data — and whether spatial data is ready for the clinic. If you're curious about how spatial biology is accelerating drug development, this episode delivers a clear, concrete introduction. #SpatialTranscriptomics #BiotechStartup #DrugDiscovery #PrecisionMedicine #Biomarker #TumorMicroenvironment #MERFISH #Visium #SpatialBiology #Genomics #Immunotherapy #CancerResearch #ClinicalTrials #Business #Technology #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #BiotechBusiness Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How Biotech Startups Use CRISPR Screens to Find New Drug Targets
Aug 20, 202610 minS4
In episode 161, Lucas and Luna dive into the world of CRISPR screens — a high-throughput method that lets biotech startups knock out thousands of genes at once to uncover which ones drive disease. They break down the difference between pooled and arrayed screens, walk through a real-world example from a startup hunting for combination therapies in ovarian cancer, and discuss the surprising finding that many new targets are genes we already knew about but never thought to drug. With a nod to the latest CRISPR screening startups and the workhorse Cas9 enzyme, this episode explains how systematic gene knockout is reshaping early-stage drug discovery. Plus, they talk about the challenge of off-target effects and what the future holds for CRISPR screens combined with single-cell readouts. If you've ever wondered how biotech companies decide which genes to target, this episode gives you the inside track. #CRISPR #CRISPRScreens #DrugDiscovery #GeneEditing #BiotechStartups #Genomics #CancerResearch #OvarianCancer #CombinationTherapies #Cas9 #HighThroughputScreening #PooledScreens #ArrayedScreens #OffTargetEffects #SingleCell #Business #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
In this episode of Biotech Business with Fexingo, Lucas and Luna dive into the world of patient registries — organized systems that collect real-world data from patients with specific conditions. They explore how startups are leveraging these registries to accelerate drug development, improve trial design, and even support regulatory approvals. Using the example of a rare disease registry, they break down the practical steps, data quality challenges, and the shift toward patient-reported outcomes. If you're in biotech, pharma, or just curious about how real-world evidence is reshaping the industry, this episode offers a clear, grounded look at an underappreciated tool. Tune in for insights on how patient registries are becoming a cornerstone of modern drug discovery. #PatientRegistries #RealWorldData #DrugDiscovery #BiotechStartups #RareDisease #ClinicalTrials #PatientCentricity #FDAApproval #HealthTech #DigitalHealth #LifeSciences #DataScience #BiotechBusiness #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #Podcast #Innovation #VentureCapital Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How Biotech Startups Use AI to Repurpose Existing Drugs
Aug 18, 20269 minS4
In this episode of Biotech Business, Lucas and Luna explore the emerging field of AI-powered drug repurposing. They discuss how startups like Healx and Recursion are using machine learning to find new uses for existing drugs, dramatically cutting the time and cost of bringing treatments to patients. The conversation centers on a recent success story: a repurposed drug for a rare genetic disorder that moved from computer prediction to Phase II trials in under two years. Lucas explains the technology behind these platforms, including graph neural networks and knowledge graphs, and contrasts the AI approach with traditional repurposing methods. Luna raises questions about regulatory pathways and the risks of relying on black-box models. The episode also touches on the broader trend of pharma companies partnering with AI startups, and what this means for the future of drug development. Tune in to understand how AI is turning the drug discovery process on its head. #BiotechBusiness #AI #DrugRepurposing #Healx #Recursion #RareDisease #MachineLearning #DrugDiscovery #Pharma #FDA #Genetics #Startups #Technology #Business #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #PrecisionMedicine #ClinicalTrials Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How Biotech Startups Use Liquid Biopsies to Find Cancer Early
Aug 17, 202610 minS4
Liquid biopsies are quietly transforming how we detect and monitor cancer — and biotech startups are at the center of it. In this episode, Lucas and Luna dig into the science and the business. They trace how a simple blood draw can catch tumor DNA months before symptoms appear, then follow a specific startup that's using methylation patterns to spot multiple cancer types at once. They break down why the economics are finally working: the cost per test has dropped from thousands to a few hundred dollars, and the FDA has approved several for clinical use. They also talk about the limits — why liquid biopsies aren't replacing tissue biopsies just yet, and where the technology still struggles with early-stage tumors. With the market projected to hit double-digit billions by 2030, startups are racing to stand out. Lucas and Luna explore what separates the winners from the also-rans: data moats, reimbursement strategy, and partnerships with health systems. A conversation for anyone curious about how a drop of blood could change the future of cancer care. #LiquidBiopsy #CancerDetection #EarlyDetection #BiotechStartup #ctDNA #Methylation #FDAApproval #PrecisionMedicine #Oncology #GuardantHealth #Grail #BiomarkerDiscovery #HealthcareInnovation #ClinicalTrials #Reimbursement #Business #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
