Professional haze machine circuit exploration
This video is an exploration of the circuitry used in many professional haze and fog machines used in the event industry. Notably the Haze Base, Unique Solutions machines. These machines share a common base control system, but differ in physical appearance. By understanding the circuitry it will help with fault diagnostics and identifying if a PCB needs replaced. The most common problems with these machines are pump failure, heater blockage and moisture issues on the control PCB. But relative to the heavy use equipment like this gets in the entertainment industry, they are very reliable units. Many of the problems can be attributed to user error and the rough life touring equipment has. These machines use a water and glycol based fluid (probably triethylene/propylene glycol) which is blown as bubbles of fluid through a heated pipe at around 200 to 250 degrees celsius. The sudden heat boils the water component, shattering the glycol into tiny airborne droplets. Mike Page has mentioned that the diodes in the thermocouple circuit are probably for an open-circuit test. If the test circuit is active and the thermocouple is intact then it will shunt the test current, but if it is open circuit the output from the amplifier will go very high. The unit I've just looked at did actually have a physically broken thermocouple, which flagged up as an E1 error. The vibratory air pump had detached from its mounting plate inside the unit and had probably rested on the thermocouple wiring, causing the bond to fatigue on the heater.
