How to Create SOPs for Your Business: What to Document First Before You Sell
Sep 29, 202625 min
If your business can't operate without you, your SOPs may be the missing piece between running a successful company and building one someone else could confidently own. Creating standard operating procedures isn't about documenting every task or producing manuals nobody reads. It's about building business systems that move critical knowledge out of your head and into processes your team can confidently follow. Where should you start? In this episdoes I break down how to create practical SOPs, what information to include and which processes deserve your attention first. From client onboarding to financial reporting, you'll learn how to identify the operational gaps that create founder dependency and make your business harder to transfer. You'll discover how to: Create clear, actionable procedures your team will actually use. Identify the three to five critical processes to document first. Record, write, test and maintain your SOPs. Strengthen business operations while preparing for a future sale. This is where documentation becomes more than an administrative task. Stronger processes support business transferability by making it easier for someone else to understand, manage and eventually own what you've built. Whether you're planning to sell in two years or ten, exit readiness starts with the operational decisions you're making today. You don't need to document everything at once. You need to start with the processes that protect your business's value and reduce its reliance on you. Ready to get started? Could You Sell Your Business Someday? 5 Things You Should Be Doing Now
Sep 22, 202619 min
You don’t need to be ready to sell your business to start building one that someone else could actually buy. Maybe selling isn’t part of your plan right now. Maybe it’s something you’ve thought about in passing, or maybe you simply like knowing that the option could be there someday. But if you did decide to sell your business five or ten years from now, would you be building it differently today? In this episode, I’m sharing five things you can start thinking about now to increase your business value and create a company that isn’t completely dependent on you to operate. We’re talking about founder dependency, the strength of your business systems, and the things that contribute to business transferability when someone else eventually needs to step into what you’ve built. Preparing to sell your business isn’t only about what happens when you’re ready to leave. Your exit readiness is shaped by decisions you’re making years before a potential sale ever happens. The goal isn’t to build your business as though you’re constantly preparing to walk away from it. It’s to build something strong enough to give you options. That means looking at where the knowledge lives, how decisions get made, how much the business relies on you personally, and whether someone else could realistically step in and continue operating what you’ve created. Even if you never sell your business, doing this work can create a stronger company today, one with more independence, more value, and more freedom for you as the owner. If you do eventually decide to sell your business, you’ll be starting from a very different position because you’ve spent years intentionally building a business worth buying. Business Exit Planning: Are Canadian Business Owners Ready for the Wave?
Sep 15, 202616 min
What happens when thousands of Canadian business owners reach retirement age but the businesses they've spent decades building aren't ready to operate without them? The coming wave of business transitions is predictable. The question is whether owners are preparing for it. Business exit planning isn't something that begins when you call a broker. It begins years earlier, in the decisions you're making about your operations, leadership, systems, and relationships. If everything still depends on you, a future buyer or successor may be taking on far more risk than they realize. We look at why so many owners struggle to prepare, from finding the right buyer or successor to understanding business valuation and addressing founder dependency. A profitable business can still be difficult to transfer when its knowledge, client relationships, and decision-making remain concentrated in one person. You'll also hear why “I'll deal with it later” doesn't necessarily buy you more time. Whether you're considering business succession, succession planning Canada, or a small business exit strategy, readiness is built through decisions not simply through the passage of time. The good news is that you don't need to have a buyer, a timeline, or a complete exit plan today. You can start by documenting what lives in your head, strengthening your team, improving operational visibility, and making your business more transferable. That's how you create freedom, flexibility, and options for the future. If you're a Canadian business owner wondering whether your company is ready for what comes next, take the Is Your Business Worth Buying? quiz. It's a practical place to understand where your business stands and what deserves your attention next. What Buyers Actually Value: Business Operations & Exit Planning
Sep 8, 202614 min
What if your business looks successful on paper but a buyer would struggle to take it over? That’s the question behind business operations and exit planning. Revenue, profitability, and strong client relationships matter, but they don’t tell the whole story. The real question is whether the business can continue to perform when the founder is no longer the person making every decision, solving every problem, and keeping everything moving. This conversation reframes business worth around what exists beyond the founder. You’ll learn why founder dependency can create risk, how business systems and documented processes make knowledge transferable, and why having a team is not the same as having a business that can operate without you. We also look at leadership and delegation, meaningful reporting, KPIs, and visibility. Strong business operations give a future owner the information they need to understand what is happening, where the risks are, and what needs attention. That clarity reduces uncertainty and uncertainty can affect business worth. The goal isn’t to create paperwork for the sake of paperwork. It’s to build business transferability through practical systems, capable leaders, documented knowledge, and better decision-making. This is where business exit planning becomes more than something you do when you’re ready to sell. It becomes part of building a stronger business today. Whether your future involves a sale, succession, stepping away as CEO, or simply having more freedom, the work starts long before the transaction. Look at what happens when you step back. What still moves? What stops? What only you know? Better business operations don’t just make a company easier to run. They create options, reduce risk, and help build a business worth buying. The Mindset Shift That Gets You Out of the Day-to-Day in Your Business
Sep 8, 202613 min
A mindset shift is often the first step toward building a business that can operate without you. Sometimes the biggest thing keeping your business dependent on you isn't your team, your systems, or your technology. It's the way you've trained the business to rely on you. If you're still the person making every important decision, solving every unexpected problem, stepping into client relationships, or answering questions your team should be able to handle, you've unintentionally created founder dependency. And changing that takes more than delegating a few tasks. In this episode, I'm talking about the founder mindset that has to change as your business grows and why moving from operator to owner means changing the way you respond when something needs to be done. Instead of asking, "How do I fix this?" we need to start asking different questions. What information is missing? What hasn't been documented? Where is decision-making authority unclear? What does someone else need to know so this problem doesn't automatically come back to me next time? That's where your entrepreneurial mindset begins to evolve from solving today's problems to building a business capable of solving tomorrow's without you. We'll also look at what happens when you start giving your team the knowledge, systems, authority, and confidence they need to make decisions independently and why that matters for exit readiness long before you're actually thinking about selling your business. Here's the question I want you to consider: If you disappeared from your business for 30 days, what would break? Which decisions would stop? Which clients would immediately ask for you? What knowledge would disappear with you? Those answers tell you a lot about how transferable your business really is. The goal isn't to remove yourself overnight. It's to intentionally build a business that can continue beyond you, whether you eventually pursue a business exit strategy, transfer leadership, or simply want more freedom from the day-to-day.
