Episode #8
#8 Injured Athlete? Here’s How Soon You Should Start Rehab
When an athlete gets injured, how long should they wait before starting rehab? In this episode, Dr. Jayson Dahlquist, PT, DPT discusses why getting an injury properly assessed and beginning appropriate rehabilitation early can make a significant difference in the return-to-sport process. We break down a randomized controlled trial by Bayer et al. , published in the New England Journal of Medicine , that compared athletes who began rehabilitation 2 days after an acute muscle injury with athletes who waited 9 days . Despite only a 7-day difference in starting rehab, the early-rehab group returned to sport approximately 3 weeks sooner . We also discuss what the process of getting into physical therapy can look like through a traditional insurance-based system compared with a direct-access, out-of-network practice like Motivation Health & Wellness . Our goal is simple: when an athlete gets hurt, we want to help determine what they need as quickly as possible. If the injury is appropriate for physical therapy, we can get the rehab process started. If we believe imaging or further medical evaluation is warranted, we'll help point you in the appropriate direction. At Motivation Health & Wellness, we specialize in working with athletes and active adults , providing one-on-one orthopedic and sports physical therapy in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
