How We Stopped Building Our Business Around Weddings
Aug 24, 20261h 1m
For years, we assumed that successful custom clothiers needed two things: lots of weddings and as many clients as possible. In this episode, we’re breaking down not just how we stopped being a wedding-focused business, but how we made the shift from letting our business control us, to being completely in control of how much money our business makes, regardless of how busy we are. We talk about the wake-up call that came in 2020, the million-dollar year in 2021 that we never want to repeat, and the changes we made to protect our time, sanity, and profitability. The biggest lesson? It’s in your power to stop working with people who you don’t want to work with and build a business that gives you plenty of money AND time. Highlights: 04:42 - How weddings became the foundation of our business and, for years, almost our entire client base. 08:21 - Why we felt trapped in the wedding cycle, even when we knew we didn’t enjoy it anymore. 10:25 - How COVID forced us to confront the business we were actually running and finally think about who our target client really was. 14:27 - The five clients who kept us afloat in 2020 and our first glimpse at a higher-value, more meaningful business model. 21:51 - The year we exceeded $1 million in revenue, worked nonstop, and realized being incredibly busy was not the business we wanted. 26:05 - There are different kinds of money: the money that drains your time and energy, and the money that doesn’t. Which one are you building your business around? 28:30 - How being too busy cost us our most valuable client. 30:09 - Why we were willing to let 33% of our business disappear, and what happened after we introduced order minimums, eliminated Saturdays, and raised our barrier to entry. 33:58 - Why the right clients make volume far less important: how we managed to work 11 days in July 2026 and hit a financial record. 46:53 - Why custom clothiers need to stop operating like wedding vendors whenever it only benefits the client. If you have specific questions about running the wedding side of your custom clothing business, send them our way. We’re putting together a deeper wedding series and want to know what you actually want us to cover. Sign up for our weekly newsletter here or DM us your questions @appointmentonlypod . Your Marketing Isn't the Problem: Designer Forum New York Recap
Aug 10, 202645 min
In this episode, we talk about our biggest takeaways from the recent Designer Forum New York Tradeshow: why you need to be physically placing yourself in the mix (not just in peoples’ DMs) and why most custom clothiers don’t have a marketing problem, they have a focus problem. We also share our take on the industry’s obsession with “scaling” and the questions we think you need to answer before you spend another dollar trying to market yourself. Highlights: 01:50 - The value in attending the Designer Forum as a custom clothier and why quality beats quantity every time. 05:55 - Revisiting two potential clients we chose not to put on the calendar and what happened after. 9:55 - Why keeping space open for the right clients is more profitable than saying yes to every lead. 12:53 - A look at our July sales and why building a calendar full of appointments that actually move the needle is entirely within your control. 17:30 - The reasons why the Designer Forum is worth attending and why you can’t just work in the industry, you need to be part of it. 24:16 - Why you need to be putting yourself in the room, not just in the DMs. 29:30 - What we loved from this year's keynote presentations and why investing in your business is essential to growth. 35:08 - Why marketing efforts are a waste of energy until you get crystal clear on who you’re actually trying to reach. 38:20 - Why we don’t teach you to scale exponentially. 41:48 - Gearing up for next January's show and how learning from experts can change your business. From One Suit to $28K: The Power of Valuing Your Time
Aug 3, 202634 min
Your clients’ time is valuable and so is yours. Today on the podcast, we break down how treating our time with respect has changed the way we qualify leads, lead appointments, and generate high ticket, predictable sales. We walk you through some of our lowest recent sales: two client inquiries that could have resulted in simple, one-item orders but became multi-thousand dollar sales because of our systems, standards, and order requirements. We also explain why luxury clients want you to take the lead, why custom means buying rather than shopping, and why the clients capable of making quick decisions are who you need to be targeting. Highlights: 02:26 - Valuing your clients’ time starts with treating your own time like it matters. 5:15 - Why you’re already working with your ideal clients and the opportunity is in learning how to lead them. 08:53 - Why selling becomes dramatically easier with clients who want your expertise and can afford your prices. 13:10 - A lesson on redefining the word “versatile”: how we turned a simple request into a $7940 sale. 19:52 - Why the right sales process eliminates unpredictability and sets you up for consistent, high ticket sales. 20:54 - Why we chose to enforce our multi-suit requirement during our slowest month. 23:49 - How rush-order minimums protect your time, filter out indecisive clients, and make urgent work worth accepting. 26:15 - How a client who wanted “just one tuxedo” for a wedding ended up spending $28,220. 27:26 - Stop living in excuses: a reminder that you already have clients who are capable of spending more. 31:08 - Why your focus should be on creating the systems that maximize everyone’s time. You might feel like you’re waiting for the “right time” to act. Fear keeps more business owners stuck than almost anything else, and in this episode we unpack how to move past it. We talk about the difference between making business decisions from a scarcity mindset versus a confidence mindset, why what’s unknown is often the upside, not the downside, and how the biggest breakthroughs in business come from choosing growth when it feels uncomfortable. If there’s one thing you take away from today’s episode it’s this: stop waiting until you feel “ready”. The time to get out of your comfort zone is right now. Highlights: 2:13 - How a scarcity mindset quietly limits business growth every single day. 06:26 - How fear focuses on the measurable downside, while confidence embraces the unpredictable upside. 10:40 - The difference between someone who’s choosing growth vs. someone who’s making decisions out of desperation. 13:40 - Why most business owners stop faking it before they actually make it. 16:17 - Getting over your brain’s need for safety: why levelling up demands discomfort. 18:18 - How shortcutting your own closet just to save money is actually costing you. 22:00 - Why most custom clothiers are too desperate to set order minimums. 24:20 - The story of how we invested in our first showroom before it felt like the “perfect” time. 30:33 - Why spending money in your business is an investment, not just an expense. 36:05 - How the life and business you want gets created one decision at a time. In this episode, we're pulling back the curtain on Luxury Clothier Collective, why we built it, and the results our members are seeing. Highlights: 04:00 - Luxury Clothier Collective enrollment is now LIVE. 05:22 - Why hesitation costs you the opportunities you want and deserve. 07:43 - An inside look at how LCC works and why we only accept one clothier per market. 10:52 - Why experience, not information, is what actually transforms a business. 12:58 - The retreat question that made us rethink how we built our own business. 18:47 - The results every member is seeing by working with fewer, higher-value clients. 20:39 - Why there's no prize for being overworked, and how to build a business that gives you a life that you love. 23:17 - How one member paid for an entire year of coaching with a single appointment. 25:58 - Why identifying the right clients is more valuable than getting more leads. 43:15 - Why investing in your business isn't an expense, it's the fastest way to change your future. Every question we get asked before someone starts their trial.
If you have a concern about deliverability, AI quality, data privacy, or whether this will actually work for your specific situation, it's probably answered below.
What is the difference between Founder Solo and Founder Pro?
Founder Solo gives you 50 AI pitches per month using the credit model (Standard pitches cost 1 credit, Enriched pitches cost 2). Founder Pro raises that to 200 credits per month and adds full Booking Probability access, unlimited Magic Match, Apollo enrichment credits, and data export capabilities. Both plans use the same credit system, so you can stretch your monthly budget further by using Standard-mode drafting.
How do agency tiers work?
Agency tiers have no base fee. You pay per managed client and per talent profile. Agency Standard is $199 per client per month; Agency Pro is $399 per client per month. Both add $39 per talent profile per month. Your own team's user seats are always free.
What is a talent profile?
A talent profile represents one person (founder, executive, or spokesperson) you are booking onto podcasts. It includes their bio, topics, headshots, and outreach history. Team plans include 5 profiles; agency plans are pay-as-you-go.
Can I switch plans later?
Yes, at any time. Upgrades take effect immediately; downgrades apply at the end of the current billing period. Contact support if you need help migrating between plan families.
Do you offer a free trial?
Every paid plan includes a 15-day free trial. Your card is saved at signup but you will not be charged until day 16. Cancel any time from your dashboard.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep access until the end of your current billing period. No charges after that. Your data is retained for 30 days in case you reactivate.
Is the 20% annual discount automatic?
Yes. Select Annual on the pricing toggle and the discounted price is applied automatically at checkout. The annual price shown is the full year cost.
What if I have more than 50 profiles or 20 clients?
That is our Enterprise tier. Contact our sales team and we will build a custom plan with volume pricing, a dedicated account manager, and SLA guarantees.
