ACCOUNTABILITY: WHO’S ACCOUNTABLE FOR BULLYING? Parents’ Rights Corner — Breaking News Live
Hosted by Ray Walton Mothers Against Bullying (MAB)CAO — Community Action Organization When a child reports bullying, who takes responsibility for what happens next? Who listens, documents the report, follows up, and makes sure that child has support? This episode asks a direct question: Where is accountability? Parents hear about policies, procedures, meetings, and programs. But what families need to know is simple: What happens when those measures fail a child? Who reviews the response? Who corrects the failures? What changes so another child does not experience the same harm? We call on school leaders, district administrators, governing boards, and the appropriate county and state authorities to explain their responsibilities clearly—and show how they carry them out. We also ask city leaders and community partners how they can help make children safer. People paid to protect, educate, and serve children should be able to explain their actions. Accountability means more than accepting a report. It means follow-through, clear communication, meaningful protection, and correcting problems. Parents and students should not be blamed for speaking up. A child should never feel that reporting bullying makes them the problem. PARENTS, UNITE. PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN. Do not wait silently for someone else to notice your child is hurting. Ask questions. Listen without judgment. Let your child know that being bullied is not their fault—and that asking for help is a strength. • Document incidents, dates, locations, and previous reports.• Save threatening messages and screenshots without spreading them publicly.• Report concerns in writing and request confirmation of receipt.• Ask who is responsible for responding and when you can expect an update.• Request a safety plan and protection against retaliation.• Ask how your child’s information will be protected and who needs access to it.• If concerns remain unresolved, request the applicable complaint and review procedures. Parents play a vital role, but they should not have to carry this responsibility alone. Schools and public agencies must do their part within their responsibilities. Every child deserves dignity, support, and adults who take concerns seriously. We stand for peaceful advocacy, fair treatment, and accountability supported by facts. Protect children’s identities. Do not threaten, harass, or publicly expose students or families. One child bullied is one child too many.It Takes a Village.
