Episode #79
The Kingdom of Kush — The Forgotten Empire of the Nile
The Kingdom of Kush was a powerful Nubian civilization that emerged south of Egypt and developed major centers at Napata and later Meroë. In the eighth century BCE, Kushite rulers conquered Egypt and established the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty, with kings such as Piye and Taharqa ruling as pharaohs. After losing Egypt to Assyria, Kush remained independent and developed a distinctive civilization known for pyramid building, ironworking, long-distance trade, Meroitic writing, and powerful royal women known as Kandakes. Kush later resisted Roman expansion and survived until the rise of new regional powers, including Aksum. Its history reveals one of ancient Africa’s most sophisticated and influential empires.
