The Silent Universe – Why Is Everything So Quiet
Episode 74 explores the Fermi paradox: the striking contradiction between a universe filled with billions of stars and planets and the complete absence of confirmed evidence for extraterrestrial civilizations. Given the age of the Milky Way, even a civilization only a few million years older than humanity might have had enough time to spread across large parts of the galaxy. The episode examines the Great Filter, the idea that one or more stages between lifeless matter and a long-lived technological civilization may be extraordinarily difficult to pass. That filter could lie behind us, in the origin of life or intelligence, or ahead of us, in the dangers that may eventually destroy advanced societies. It also considers less catastrophic explanations. Advanced civilizations might become quiet, energy-efficient, digital, or uninterested in expansion. Our own searches may be too narrow, focused mainly on radio signals while alien technologies could use methods we do not recognize. Vast distances and differences in timing may also prevent civilizations from noticing one another. Finally, the episode explores ideas such as the zoo hypothesis, the dark forest hypothesis, machine civilizations, humanity possibly appearing unusually early, and the possibility that earlier civilizations have already vanished. The Fermi paradox remains unresolved because we still know very little about how often life begins, how often intelligence evolves, and how long technological civilizations survive.
