Governing The Non-Human Workforce: Can Healthcare Trust AI Agents?
As healthcare organizations begin to adopt agentic AI systems that can make decisions and take action, a critical question is emerging: can healthcare trust these agents to operate safely on its behalf? New research from Imprivata and Vanson Bourne titled The Agentic AI Trust Gap: Why Healthcare Needs Identity-Led Governance reveals both strong optimism about agentic AI’s potential and significant gaps in visibility, governance, and accountability. While 88% expect AI agents to operate with some degree of autonomy across clinical and operational workflows, 72% report that AI tools or agents are deployed without formal IT approval at least occasionally. In this episode, Chip Hughes is joined by Travis Favaron, Imprivata’s resident technical expert on agentic AI, and Dr. Sean Kelly, Imprivata’s chief medical officer, to explore what the findings of this research mean for healthcare. They discuss why AI agents need their own identities, how organizations should define delegated authority, where human oversight is essential, and what healthcare leaders can do now to build trust in the next generation of AI.
