Yo-Yo Ma, born on October 7, 1955, is an American cellist known for his extraordinary talent from a young age. Born to Chinese parents in Paris, he began studying the cello with his father at age four. His family relocated to Boston when he was seven, and later to New York City, where he continued his cello studies at the Juilliard School. Ma further pursued a liberal arts education at Harvard University while establishing a distinguished career as a soloist worldwide. He has performed with orchestras across the globe and recorded more than 92 albums, earning 20 Grammy Awards. Ma's extensive repertoire includes classical music, folk music, and collaborations across diverse genres. His recordings feature American bluegrass, traditional Chinese melodies, Argentine tangos by Astor Piazzolla, and Brazilian music. He also has worked with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Carlos Santana, Chris Botti, Diana Krall, James Taylor, Miley Cyrus, Zakir Hussain, and Sting. Recognized for his contributions to music and international peace, Ma has been a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2006. He has received numerous honors, including the Avery Fisher Prize, the Glenn Gould Prize, the National Medal of Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Kennedy Center Honors, the Polar Music Prize, and the Birgit Nilsson Prize. His primary performance instrument is the Davidov Stradivarius cello, made in 1712 by Antonio Stradivari.
