About Winston Peters
Winston Raymond Peters is a New Zealand politician born on 11 April 1945. He has led the political party New Zealand First since its founding in 1993 and has served as the 25th minister of foreign affairs since November 2023. Peters is a long-serving member of Parliament, having been re-elected in the 2023 general election for a fifteenth term. His parliamentary career includes periods from 1979 to 1981, 1984 to 2008, and 2011 to 2020. He has held multiple significant roles, including serving three terms as deputy prime minister. Peters’s political journey began when he entered the House of Representatives in 1979 for the National Party, after a court ruling confirmed his victory. He gained prominence in the 1980s as an eloquent Māori conservative and became notable for exposing the Māori loan affair in 1986. His first cabinet position was as the minister of Māori affairs in 1990 under Jim Bolger’s government, but he was dismissed in 1991 following criticism of neoliberal policies. Peters left the National Party in 1993, briefly served as an independent, and then founded New Zealand First, a populist party supported by former Labour and National voters disillusioned with neoliberal reforms. As leader, he has participated in various coalition governments, serving as deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister, and has been involved in initiatives such as the Winebox Inquiry. Peters's political career includes periods of opposition and coalition, reflecting his influence on New Zealand's political landscape.
