About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (c. 23 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor recognized as one of the most influential writers in the English language. Widely regarded as the greatest dramatist in the world, he is often called the Bard of Avon or England's national poet. His body of work includes approximately 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and three long narrative poems, along with other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at age 18 and had three children. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, playwright, and part-owner of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. Around 1613, he retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Throughout his career, he produced most of his works, including early comedies and histories, his renowned tragedies such as Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, and later tragicomedies like The Winter's Tale and The Tempest. His plays continue to be studied, performed, and reinterpreted, and his works were posthumously collected in the First Folio of 1623.
