She was raised in Cleckheaton, West Riding of Yorkshire, and attended Whitcliffe Mount School before studying English at Girton College, Cambridge, graduating in the mid-1980s. After moving to London, Holden worked in the magazine industry, including positions at The Diplomat and The Sunday Times. During her career at The Sunday Times, she ghostwrote a column for socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, an experience that influenced her debut novel, Simply Divine, published in 1999. Holden authored a series of bestselling novels often categorized as chick lit or supermarket novels. Later in her career, she shifted focus to historical fiction, with her first in the genre being The Governess, which explores the life of Marion Crawford, the governess to the future Queen Elizabeth II. Her subsequent novel, The Duchess, released in 2021, centers on Wallis Simpson. Besides her writing career, Holden is associated with Arthritis Action. She is married with two children and resides in the Derbyshire Peak District.
