Scott's estate
About Walter Scott
Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, was a Scottish novelist, poet, and historian born on 15 August 1771 and died on 21 September 1832. Many of his works are considered classics of European and Scottish literature. He is especially known for his Waverley novels published between 1814 and 1831, which enjoyed widespread popularity across Europe for nearly a century. Additionally, he authored narrative poems such as Marmion and The Lady of the Lake, published in 1808 and 1810 respectively. Scott was also an advocate and legal administrator, serving as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire, roles that he balanced alongside his writing and editing pursuits. His involvement extended into prominent social and scholarly circles; he was active in Edinburgh’s Tory establishment, participated in the Highland Society, and served as president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1820 to 1832. He also held the position of vice president of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland from 1827 to 1829. His extensive knowledge of history and literary talent contributed to establishing the historical novel genre as an exemplar of European Romanticism. Scott was created a baronet of Abbotsford in the County of Roxburgh on 22 April 1820, a title that became extinct upon the death of his son in 1847.
