Uwe Boll is a German filmmaker born on June 22, 1965. He gained prominence during the 2000s for his adaptations of video game franchises. His theatrical releases during this period were often critically and commercially unsuccessful, with the 2005 film Alone in the Dark being notably regarded as one of the worst films ever made. Throughout the 2010s, Boll’s projects mainly moved to direct-to-video releases that received negative reviews, although some, such as Rampage and Darfur from 2009, were more positively received. In 2016, Boll retired from filmmaking to pursue a career as a restaurateur, but he returned to the industry in 2020. His 2026 action thriller Citizen Vigilante attracted attention and controversy after it was refused age certification in Germany, which prevented its wide distribution.
