Michael Trent Reznor, born on May 17, 1965, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and composer known for his work in the industrial rock genre. He gained prominence as the founder, lead singer, multi-instrumentalist, and primary songwriter of the band Nine Inch Nails. Reznor has been the band's only official member from its inception in 1988 until 2016, when he added Atticus Ross as a permanent collaborator. His music career began in 1982 with synth-pop bands such as The Innocent, Slam Bamboo, and Exotic Birds. Nine Inch Nails released their debut album Pretty Hate Machine in 1989, which achieved moderate success and maintained underground popularity.
