Thomas Hawley Tuberville is an American politician and retired college football coach who serves as the senior United States senator from Alabama. He has held this position since 2021 and is a member of the Republican Party. Prior to his political career, Tuberville was a prominent college football coach. He served as the head football coach at Auburn University from 1999 to 2008, during which time he received five national coach-of-the-year awards following Auburn's undefeated 13-0 season in 2004. His coaching career also included tenures at the University of Mississippi from 1995 to 1998, Texas Tech University from 2010 to 2012, and the University of Cincinnati from 2013 to 2016. Tuberville is known for his accomplishments in college football, including a record of six consecutive wins against the rival University of Alabama and earning his 100th career win in 2007. He was recognized as the president of the American Football Coaches Association in 2015 and worked as a college football color analyst for ESPN in 2017. In the political arena, Tuberville ran for Senate in 2020, winning the Republican primary and defeating incumbent Democrat Doug Jones. His political stance aligns with President Donald Trump, and he notably voted to object to the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. In 2023, he delayed over 450 military promotions as a protest against a Defense Department policy regarding reproductive health benefits for soldiers.
