About Tom Roberts
Thomas William Roberts was an English-born Australian artist and a key member of the Heidelberg School art movement, also known as Australian impressionism. He studied in Melbourne before traveling to Europe in 1881 to enhance his artistic training and returned to Australia in 1885, bringing with him the latest developments in art. That year, he helped establish the Box Hill artists' camp alongside Frederick McCubbin, which became one of several plein air camps frequented by Heidelberg School artists. Roberts, who was nicknamed 'Bulldog' for his tenacity and drive, played a leading role in promoting the national life of Australia through art. He is best known for creating works that depict Australian themes, including Shearing the Rams, A break away!, and Bailed Up. Besides his national narratives, Roberts earned his livelihood as a society portraitist and was an advocate for Australia's cultural independence; notably, he was the first to push for a dedicated National Portrait Gallery in Australia. In 1903, he completed The Big Picture, a significant visual representation of the first Australian Parliament. Throughout his career, Roberts was considered the primary force behind the Heidelberg School movement and contributed to its legacy by encouraging fellow artists to explore and depict Australia’s national identity.
