Thomas Baptist Morello, born on May 30, 1964, is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and political activist. He is recognized for his work with the rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Morello was also a member of the supergroup Prophets of Rage from 2016 to 2019 and occasionally performs with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Under the name the Nightwatchman, he has released solo work, and with Boots Riley, he formed the group Street Sweeper Social Club. Additionally, Morello is a co-founder of Axis of Justice, which broadcasts a monthly program on KPFK in Los Angeles. Born in Harlem and raised in Libertyville, Illinois, Morello developed an interest in music and politics during high school. He attended Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies. After his band Lock Up disbanded, he met Zack de la Rocha, and together they founded Rage Against the Machine, which became one of the most influential metal acts of the 1990s. Known for his innovative guitar playing style, Morello incorporates feedback noise, unconventional picking, tapping, and various guitar effects. He is also recognized for his socialist political views and activism, which he expresses through his solo project The Nightwatchman while maintaining more apolitical music with Audioslave. His contributions to music have earned him a ranking as number 18 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of greatest guitarists of all time, and Rage Against the Machine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
