Tom Crean: podcast appearances and interviews

Tom Crean was an Irish seaman and Antarctic explorer who participated in three major expeditions during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His expeditions included Robert Falcon Scott's 1911–1913 Terra Nova Expedition and Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Crean's notable achievements included a solo 35-mile walk across the Ross Ice Shelf to rescue Edward Evans during the Terra Nova Expedition, for which he was awarded the Albert Medal for Lifesaving. His experiences on the expeditions demonstrated remarkable endurance and bravery. Crean joined the Royal Navy at age 16 after leaving the family farm near Annascaul in County Kerry. His exploration career commenced in 1901 when he volunteered for Scott's Discovery Expedition to Antarctica while serving aboard the vessel Ringarooma in New Zealand. During the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, Crean was part of the crew that endured 492 days on drifting ice after the Endurance was trapped and sank in the pack ice. He participated in the small-boat journey of approximately 800 nautical miles from Elephant Island to South Georgia Island to seek aid for stranded crew members. After retiring from the navy in 1920 due to health reasons, Crean ran the South Pole Inn in County Kerry with his family. He passed away in 1938, leaving a legacy as one of the notable explorers of his time.
