About Tim Wu

Timothy Shiou-Ming Wu is a Taiwanese-American legal scholar specializing in antitrust, copyright, and telecommunications law. He is a professor of law at Columbia University and has contributed as a writer of opinion pieces for The New York Times. Wu is recognized for his academic work in media and technology industries, and he gained prominence for coining the phrase network neutrality in his 2003 law journal article, Network Neutrality, Broadband Discrimination. He has been an influential advocate in antitrust issues, including leading efforts to pursue a lawsuit aimed at breaking up Facebook in the late 2010s.

Wu has held various governmental roles, including serving as a senior advisor to the Federal Trade Commission from 2011 to 2012 and as senior enforcement counsel at the New York Office of the Attorney General from 2015 to 2016. During his time at the Attorney General's office, he successfully litigated against Time Warner Cable for false advertising related to broadband speeds. He also served on the National Economic Council in the Obama administration and in the Biden administration, where he contributed to the drafting of the 2021 Executive Order on Competition.

Wu was named to The National Law Journal's list of America's 100 Most Influential Lawyers in 2013, and to the Politico 50 in 2014 and 2015.
