Thomas Hughes (20 October 1822 – 22 March 1896) was an English lawyer, judge, politician, and author. He is best known for his novel Tom Brown's School Days, published in 1857, which is a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, an institution he attended himself. The novel was followed by a lesser-known sequel titled Tom Brown at Oxford, published in 1861. Hughes's interests extended beyond literature; he served as a Member of Parliament and was actively involved in the British co-operative movement. Additionally, he founded a settlement in Rugby, Tennessee, in the United States, which reflected his personal values and social concerns. Throughout his life, Hughes combined his legal and political careers with his literary pursuits, contributing to discussions on education, society, and community development.
