About Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman known for his numerous innovations including the incandescent light bulb, phonograph, electric power distribution, and early motion pictures. He held 1093 patents and was instrumental in the formation of General Electric through the merger of several of his businesses and other companies. Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, and grew up in Michigan with limited formal schooling. After becoming deaf as a child, he learned through books and tinkering. He began working as a railroad telegrapher and soon started inventing improvements to telegraph systems. By age 22, he had sold early inventions and moved to New York City to focus on engineering. Edison established a telegraph recorder factory in Newark with over a hundred employees by age 29 and later developed the first industrial research laboratory at Menlo Park. Known as The Wizard of Menlo Park, he drove his staff hard while rapidly expanding his inventions and publicity. Edison's work on electrical lighting systems began in 1878, leading to the development of the modern electric grid. His efforts contributed to the creation of a vast network of light bulbs, generators, and distribution systems, which eventually led to the formation of General Electric. Edison also worked on a mining company, a cement business, and a motion picture studio, continually diversifying his interests. Despite health issues from exposure to toxic chemicals and ongoing battles with diabetes, he remained active in his pursuits until his death. His son Charles Edison succeeded him in business.
