Terence McKenna: podcast appearances and interviews

Terence Kemp McKenna was an American ethnobotanist, lecturer, and author known for his advocacy of the responsible use of naturally occurring psychedelic plants and mushrooms. Throughout his career, he addressed a broad array of topics including plant-based entheogens, shamanism, metaphysics, alchemy, language, philosophy, culture, technology, ethnomycology, and environmentalism. Born in Colorado, he developed an early interest in nature, psychology, and visionary experiences, which was shaped by his travels in Asia and South America during the 1960s and 1970s. His research and writings contributed to the popularization of psilocybin mushrooms and other psychedelics, particularly through cultivation methods. McKenna became a prominent countercultural figure in the 1980s and 1990s, delivering lectures and publishing influential works that explored the spiritual and philosophical aspects of psychedelic substances. He co-founded Botanical Dimensions in Hawaii and was noted for his critiques of synthetic drugs and organized religion, emphasizing shamanic traditions and direct plant-based spiritual experiences. McKenna held the belief that psychedelics facilitated access to visionary states and communication with intelligent entities, and he theorized that substances like psilocybin mushrooms might be extraterrestrial in origin. He also proposed the 'stoned ape' theory, suggesting that psychedelics played a role in human evolution, language, and culture. In addition, he developed the concept of novelty theory based on fractal patterns observed in the I Ching, which he linked to the Mayan calendar and the year 2012, although this theory is considered pseudoscientific. McKenna passed away in 2000 from brain cancer.
