Steven Patrick Garvey, born on December 22, 1948, is a former professional baseball player known for his long and distinguished career in Major League Baseball. He played primarily as a first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres from 1969 to 1987. Garvey began his major league career with the Dodgers in 1969 and achieved numerous accolades, including winning the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1974 and being named the National League Championship Series MVP in 1978. He was a key member of the Dodgers' 1981 World Series championship team and was also named NLCS MVP in 1984, notably hitting a walk-off home run to secure the victory for the Padres. Garvey was a ten-time National League All-Star, with nine selections as a starting first baseman, a record for the position. He holds the NL record for consecutive games played with 1,207. The Padres retired his jersey number, 6, in 1988. Beyond his athletic achievements, Garvey served as vice president of the philanthropic organization No Greater Love. In recent years, Garvey entered politics, announcing a campaign as a Republican candidate for the United States Senate from California in 2024. He advanced to the general election after a competitive primary but was ultimately defeated by Democrat Adam Schiff in the November 2024 election.
