Steven David Daines is an American politician and businessman serving as the senior United States senator from Montana. He has held this position since 2015 and is notable for being the first Republican Class II senator from Montana in 102 years. Daines previously represented Montana's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2015. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Bozeman, Montana, he worked at Procter & Gamble and RightNow Technologies before entering politics. After an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2008, he was elected to Congress in 2012. In 2014, he was elected to the Senate, becoming the first Republican to win a U.S. Senate seat in Montana in the 21st century, and was reelected in 2020 by defeating incumbent governor Steve Bullock. In 2023, Daines became chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, succeeding Rick Scott, and under his leadership, Republicans gained four Senate seats in the 2024 election cycle, securing a majority in the chamber. He became Montana's senior senator and dean of the state's congressional delegation in 2025 following Jon Tester's departure from office. On March 4, 2026, Daines announced that he would not seek reelection in Montana, just minutes before the filing deadline.
