Steve Albini: podcast appearances and interviews

Steven Frank Albini was an American musician and audio engineer born in Pasadena, California, and raised in Missoula, Montana. He was known for founding and fronting influential bands in the post-hardcore and noise rock genres, including Big Black, Rapeman, and Shellac. Albini's musical career began with Big Black in 1981, where he played a leading role and helped release several albums and EPs. He later formed Rapeman in 1987 and Shellac in 1992, continuing to release music and maintain an active presence in the underground music scene. Beyond performance, Albini gained recognition as a recording engineer, rejecting traditional notions of a 'record producer' to focus on engineering. He collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including the Pixies, PJ Harvey, Nirvana, Manic Street Preachers, and many others, engineering acclaimed albums such as Surfer Rosa, Rid of Me, and In Utero. Albini operated a recording studio called Electrical Audio in Chicago, founded in 1997, which prioritized a live sound and affordable recording. He was known for his outspoken opinions, including criticisms of local punk scenes and the music industry, which he viewed as exploitative; he was also a staunch advocate of analog recording and praised internet-driven musical independence. Throughout his career, Albini maintained a strict approach to royalties, refusing to accept them on albums he engineered. His artistic pursuits extended into transgressive art, which he later expressed regret over. Albini passed away from a heart attack in 2024.
