Stephen Lawrence Schwartz, born on March 6, 1948, is an American musical theatre composer and lyricist with a career spanning over five decades. He has authored several successful musicals including Godspell, which debuted in 1971; Pippin, from 1972; and Wicked, first performed in 2003. Schwartz has also contributed lyrics to various notable films such as Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Enchanted. In addition to writing lyrics, he composed both music and lyrics for The Prince of Egypt and the two-part adaptation of Wicked scheduled for 2024 to 2025. Throughout his career, Schwartz has received numerous awards and nominations. His accolades include three Grammy Awards, three Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and six Tony Award nominations. In 2015, he was honored with the Tony Award's Isabelle Stevenson Award. His contributions to theatre and film have established him as a prominent figure in the industry.
