About Stanley Hauerwas

Stanley Martin Hauerwas, born on July 24, 1940, is an American Protestant theologian, ethicist, and public intellectual. He has held academic positions at the University of Notre Dame, Duke University, and the University of Aberdeen. At Duke Divinity School, he served as the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics and held a joint appointment at the Duke University School of Law. In 2014, he assumed a chair in theological ethics at the University of Aberdeen. Hauerwas is regarded as one of the most influential living theologians and was named America’s Best Theologian by Time magazine in 2001. He was the first American theologian in over forty years to deliver the Gifford Lectures at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. His work is frequently engaged by scholars across disciplines such as political philosophy, sociology, history, and literary theory. As a public intellectual, Hauerwas has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and is notable outside academia.
