About Sima Samar
Sima Samar, born on February 3, 1957, is a human rights advocate, activist, and medical doctor with a prominent presence in both national and international forums. She served as Vice President of Afghanistan in the interim government of Hamid Karzai and was the Minister for Women's Affairs from December 2001 to 2003. Samar is the former Chairperson of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission and has also worked as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Sudan from 2005 to 2009. In 2012, she received the Right Livelihood Award in recognition of her longstanding and courageous dedication to human rights, particularly those of women, in one of the most complex and dangerous regions of the world.
