Sigourney Weaver is an American actress born in New York City on October 8, 1949. She has been active in film since the late 1970s and is recognized for her pioneering portrayals of action heroines in blockbuster films as well as her roles in independent movies. Weaver is a recipient of numerous awards including a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. She has also received nominations for three Academy Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award. Weaver's debut came with a minor role in the film Annie Hall, but she gained widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Ellen Ripley in the science fiction horror film Alien and its sequels. Her role as Ripley is regarded as a significant female protagonist in cinema history.
