Shirley Hardie Jackson was an American writer born in San Francisco, California, on December 14, 1916. She is primarily known for her works of horror and mystery, which include six novels, two memoirs, and over 200 short stories. Jackson attended Syracuse University in New York, where she participated in the university's literary magazine and met her future husband, Stanley Edgar Hyman. Following graduation, the couple moved to New York City, contributing to publications such as The New Yorker. In 1945, they settled in North Bennington, Vermont, after the birth of their first child, when Hyman joined the faculty of Bennington College.
