first black woman elected to US congress
About Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Anita Chisholm (born St. Hill; November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005) was an American politician known for her groundbreaking achievements in US politics. In 1968, she became the first black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. Chisholm was a staunch advocate for social, economic, and political justice, actively supporting civil rights and women's rights throughout her career. In 1972, she made history as the first black candidate for a major-party presidential nomination and the first woman to seek the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, she spent part of her childhood in Barbados and identified as a Barbadian American. She excelled academically, earning degrees in Brooklyn and at Columbia University. Her career began in early-childhood education before she became involved in local Democratic Party politics during the 1950s. Overcoming resistance due to her gender, she was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1964 and later to Congress in 1968. During her tenure in Congress, she prioritized the expansion of food and nutrition programs for impoverished communities and rose to party leadership. After retiring in 1983, Chisholm taught at Mount Holyoke College and continued her political organizing. Although nominated for an ambassadorship to Jamaica in 1993, health issues prevented her from serving. She was posthumously honored with both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
