Patrick Sean Payton is an American professional football coach and former quarterback. He is the head coach for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). Previously, he served as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints from 2006 to 2021. During his tenure with the Saints, he led the franchise to its first Super Bowl victory in the 2009 season. Payton played college football for the Eastern Illinois Panthers and also had brief professional playing stints with the Chicago Bears in 1987 and with the Leicester Panthers in Britain in 1988. He began his coaching career as an offensive assistant at San Diego State University and held several assistant coaching positions at both college and NFL levels before being named the Saints head coach in 2006. Known for his offensive expertise, Payton set records for points scored and yards gained in his first 100 NFL games as a coach. Under his leadership, the Saints made their first NFC Championship appearance and won their first Super Bowl. Throughout his 16 seasons with the team, he guided the Saints to three NFC Championship games, nine playoff berths, and seven division titles, establishing himself as the most successful coach in franchise history. Payton's coaching career was notably marked by a suspension during the 2012 NFL season due to his involvement in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. Despite this controversy, he continued to be recognized for his coaching accomplishments and is noted for his offensive strategies within the league.
