Sean Patrick Astin, born on February 25, 1971, is an American actor and trade union leader. He began his acting career as a child, making his film debut as Mikey Walsh in The Goonies in 1985. He has played significant roles in several films including Billy Tepper in Toy Soldiers, Dave Morgan in Encino Man, Daniel Ruettiger in Rudy, and Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Astin is also known for his television work, including portraying Lynn McGill on the fifth season of 24, voicing Oso in Special Agent Oso, and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also played Bob Newby on the second season of Stranger Things. Throughout his career, Astin has received various awards including a Screen Actors Guild Award and two Young Artist Awards. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film in 1994 for Kangaroo Court. Astin is the son of actress Patty Duke and was adopted in 1972 by her then-husband, actor John Astin. In addition to his acting career, Astin serves as the fourth national president of SAG-AFTRA, having been elected to a two-year term beginning in September 2025 after running for the position in 2025.
