Fisher has had a notable career in sports as well as in psychiatry; he was a professional basketball player and coach, most recognized for his association with the Perth Wildcats in the National Basketball League. During his playing career, he achieved significant success including winning the NBL Most Valuable Player award in 1989 and 1992 while with the North Melbourne Giants. He contributed to the Giants' 1989 championship victory and later secured two more championships with the Wildcats in 1995 and 2000. Additionally, Fisher represented Australia in international competitions, participating in the 1996 Olympic Games and the 1998 FIBA World Championship.
