Scott Carpenter: podcast appearances and interviews

Scott Carpenter served as the Director of Public Relations for Metroparks Toledo. His professional background includes a diverse career in aerospace and naval aviation. He was a member of the Mercury Seven astronauts selected for NASA's Project Mercury in 1959. Carpenter was the second American to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space. His prior service with the U.S. Navy began in 1949, where he became a naval aviator and flew reconnaissance and anti-submarine missions during the Korean War and the Cold War. He also attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and became a test pilot. Carpenter was involved in space missions and was the backup to John Glenn during the Mercury Atlas 6 mission. He piloted the Mercury Atlas 7 mission, naming his spacecraft Aurora 7. Despite some malfunctions during reentry, both he and his spacecraft were retrieved safely. In addition to his spaceflight duties, Carpenter participated in the U.S. Navy SEALAB project, living underwater for 28 days as part of SEALAB II. He later served as an executive assistant at NASA and directed operations for SEALAB III. He retired from NASA and the Navy with the rank of commander. After his retirement, Carpenter worked as a consultant, engaging with the sports, diving, and film industries. He also authored books and appeared in documentaries and commercials, contributing to public understanding of space flight and oceanography.
