Satish Kumar is an Indian British activist, peace pilgrim, and speaker. He has been a Jain monk, a nuclear disarmament advocate, and a pacifist. Kumar is the founder and Director of Programmes at Schumacher College, an international center for ecological studies, and serves as Editor Emeritus of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine. His most notable achievement is a peace walk undertaken in 1962, during which he traveled over 8,000 miles with a companion from New Delhi to Moscow, Paris, London, and Washington, D.C., the capitals of the world's earliest nuclear-armed countries. Throughout his work, he emphasizes the importance of reverence for nature in political and social discourse. Kumar advocates for a shift in perspective away from what he considers outdated notions of realism, criticizing the outcomes of traditional political strategies for leading to war, climate change, poverty, and ecological destruction. He argues that many current leaders’ approaches have failed to address the profound challenges facing humanity and calls for integrating ecological consciousness into all aspects of society.
