Carl Sanford Joslyn Sandy Petersen, born on September 16, 1955, is an American game designer. He has worked at Chaosium, where he contributed to the development of the role-playing game RuneQuest and created the influential horror role-playing game Call of Cthulhu. Petersen's career includes a period at id Software, where he was involved in the development of the Doom franchise and Quake. He also contributed to the Age of Empires franchise as part of Ensemble Studios. Currently affiliated with Petersen Games, he continues to engage in game design.
