Sam Jay, born Samaria Johnson on January 13, 1982, is an American comedian and writer known for her work in television and streaming comedy. She made history as the first Black lesbian writer for Saturday Night Live, serving from 2017 to 2020, and has been recognized with three Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. Jay has released two comedy specials, with her 2023 stand-up titled Sam Jay: Salute Me or Shoot Me available on HBO Max, and her 2020 special 3 in the Morning available on Netflix. She is a co-creator and co-star of the HBO series Pause with Sam Jay, which aired from 2021 to 2022, and she also contributed to the Peacock comedy series Bust Down in 2022.
