Rosa Somerville Hope was an English astrophysicist, mentor, and mystic born on 8 June 1902 in Manchester, England. Although she was also recognized as a painter, her scientific pursuits in astrophysics are a notable aspect of her career. Hope's background included artistic influences through her mother, a teacher at the Camberwell School of Art, and her father's occupation as an agent. In 1935, she visited South Africa and decided to remain there, living in Kokstad until her death on 7 May 1972.
