Rodney James Alcala was an American serial killer and convicted sex offender. Born on August 23, 1943, and deceased on July 24, 2021, Alcala was sentenced to death in California for five murders committed between 1977 and 1979. He also pleaded guilty to two additional murders in New York State, receiving two sentences of twenty-five years to life. Alcala was indicted for another murder in Wyoming; however, the charges in that case were dropped. While conclusive evidence links him to nine murders, the total number of his victims remains unknown, with estimates suggesting it could be as high as 130. Alcala maintained a collection of more than 1,000 photographs depicting women, teenage girls, and boys, many in sexually explicit poses. In 2016, he was charged with the 1977 murder of a woman identified in one of his photographs.
