Roberta Lynn Williams is an American video game designer and writer known for her significant contributions to the industry. She co-founded Sierra On-Line with her husband, game developer Ken Williams. Her first game, Mystery House, was released in 1980 and is credited as the first graphic adventure game. Williams is best known for creating and maintaining the King's Quest series and designing the full motion video game Phantasmagoria in 1995. Her work has earned her recognition as one of the most influential creators in the video game industry, and she has been called the queen of adventure games. After Sierra was acquired by CUC International in 1996, Williams experienced management changes and later left the company in 1999. Following her departure from the industry, she focused on traveling and writing historical fiction, publishing the novel Farewell to Tara in 2021. She returned to game development with the 3D remake of Colossal Cave Adventure, titled Colossal Cave, released in 2023. Williams has received numerous accolades, including the Industry Icon Award from the Game Awards and the Pioneer Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards, recognizing her pioneering influence and legacy in adventure gaming.
