Robert Zemeckis is an American filmmaker born on May 14, 1951. He is recognized for directing and producing numerous successful and influential films that often incorporate advanced visual effects with compelling storytelling. Zemeckis has received multiple awards throughout his career including two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He has also been nominated for five British Academy Film Awards and a Daytime Emmy Award. His early work includes the short film A Field of Honor which earned him a Student Academy Award for Special Jury Prize at the University of Southern California. He began his career directing comedy films such as I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Used Cars, and Romancing the Stone. Zemeckis gained widespread recognition with the sci-fi comedy Back to the Future trilogy and the animated fantasy Who Framed Roger Rabbit. His film Forrest Gump, a comedy-drama, earned him the Academy Award for Best Director. His filmography also includes the satirical black comedy Death Becomes Her, the science fiction film Contact, as well as dramas like Cast Away, Flight, The Walk, and Allied. He has explored motion-capture technology in animated and fantasy films including The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, Beowulf, and Welcome to Marwen. Since 1984, he has collaborated with film composer Alan Silvestri, and he has directed Tom Hanks in five films.
